Despite Cuban approval of Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights the regime persists in executing its politics of freedom and civil liberties restriction while sentencing defenders of human rights and pro-democratic activists to long years of imprisonment.

More than 50 prisoners of the Cuban Black Spring remain imprisoned after five years. They and other Cubans are in jail only for peacefully promoting, defending and exercising universally recognized human rights, many of the working with the Varela Project.

On 30 May 2008 the group of members of parliament and senators appointed Parliamentary Group “Free Cuba”. The purpose of the Group is to support activities for the benefit of democratization of Cuba.. The team is made up of the chairperson: Maciej Plazynski, the deputy chairperson: Adam Lipinski and its members: Ludwik Dorn, Jaroslaw Gowin, Longin Komolowski Pawel Kowal, Bogdan Lis, Zbigniew Romaszewski, Pawel Zalewski and Marek Ziolkowski.

To promote peaceful democratic change in Cuba and show support for the Cuban people, May 21 will mark a “Day of Solidarity with the Cuban People.” The day will focus on the plight of prisoners of conscience and the lack of civil and political freedoms in Cuba.
