Lech Walesa talks with Cuban dissidents

The 21st of January 2006, President Lech Walesa participated in a video conference with Cuban dissidents. Lech Walesa stated that Cuba shall return as soon as possible to the international community, where democracy and liberty are the most valuable values. Walesa also stated that he is ready to support Cubans with their struggle.

“The world without Cuba is poor, but the liberation day is very close, because nobody is believing in Communism anymore. You shall be united in your aims; otherwise anarchy will prevail ” – recommended The President.

About 100 persons were present in the conference, including diplomats and journalists. Martha Beatriz Roque express thanks for the conference and recalled that 330 prisoners of conscience are held in prison with sentences even to 28 years for political beliefs. Martha Roque, was a political prisoner itself from 1997 to 2000 and is president of the Association for the promotion of Civil Society.

Lech Walesa stated that the best support for the “absent” is moral support and unity within the Cuban dissidence.  Success will be fullest if the group is fully organized

Dagoberto Valdes (Editor in Chef  of Revista Vitral magazine) asked about the function of the catholic church during the transformation process. The President responded that the church is the only mainstay would be the only institution that will survive the transformation process.

Angel Polanco, independent  journalist, said “For me, and for many other Cubans, You are a symbol of the struggle for basic human rights”. “This is a historical meeting, we will remember it for a long time”. “We are very grateful for your words of support”

Some hours earlier, The President met  aw with Blanca Reyes in the Lech Walesa Institute in Warsaw She is one of the founders of the movement “Women in White”, a group that each Sunday protest in Havana against the arrest for political reasons of their husbands, sons and brothers, by march 2003. Women in White received the prize Andrej Sacharow from the European Parliament in December 2005
