There are many organizations, associations and websites focusing on the topic of civil rights and civil society in Cuba. We show you only a little piece of virtual reality devoted to that issue.
The majority of existing websites are in English and Spanish.
Apart from the websites run by organizations concerning Cuba cause, we strongly recommend visiting websites of international non-governmental organizations engaged in abiding civil rights all over the world.

Cubanet is an association of publishers established in 1994 whose work is based on co-operation between independent freelancers and journalists from Cuba. The association is publishing many notes, articles and brochures about current affairs in Cuba which are being sent every two months and published every three months in a magazine. Cubanet declares itself as a non-governmental organization and it pretends to be the best source of information about Cuban reality in many fields: politics, social problems, economy, civil rights abiding and everyday life. Cubanet is universally acknowledged thanks to its objectivism and reliability. The website is available in three languages: Spanish, English and French.



Encuentro de la cultura cubana

”Encuentro” is a Spanish word that stands for English „meeting”. It’s a magazine devoted to Cuban culture established in 1996 in Madrid. It shows up every three months but the articles are posted every day on the internet. As an example there are chronicles and reports written by twelve independent journalists from Havana. It also has regular co-workers such as Raul Rivero, the most famous Cuban writer, journalist, essayist and one of the leading members of the dissident’s movement. He was arrested and imprisoned during the wave of repressions of the Black Spring in 2003. He was released in April 2005 under the influence of public opinion. Currently he’s living in emigration in Spain with his wife Blanca Reyes – one of the Lades in White.
The founder of Encuentro was Jesus Diaz – famous Cuban writer, journalist and a political refugee, who passed away in 2002.
The role of Encuentro for Cuban intelligentsia can be compared to the role of Polish “Culture” in the period of PRL.

 

Cuban American National Foundation

Cuban-American National Foundation (CANF) is the biggest Cuban organization of emigrants in USA. CANF functions as a non-governmental, non-profit organization preaching overthrow of Fidel Castro and the immediate introduction of democracy. CANF was set up in 1981 in Florida to support the idea of peaceful transformation, pluralistic political system, free-market economy, abiding of civil rights and the state of law. CANF, avoiding helping Cuban authorities, supports efforts of the opposition and dissidents in Cuba. It’s an organization with an explicit political profile that leads international lobbing in order to maintain the isolation of the Castro’s regime.

Center for a Free Cuba (CFC) is an independent non-partisan institution concerning promoting the idea of civil rights and transformation of the political system to democracy. CFC was established in 1997 as a center of collecting and spreading information about Cuba and Cubans in media, non-governmental organizations and international public opinion. The center supports Cubans living in the island by its humanitarian programs.

Cuban Democratic Directorate is a non-governmental non-profit organization engaged in supporting establishing democracy in Cuba by peaceful methods. Directorio provides material and humanitarian aid for prodemocracy organizations, helps in the exchange of information between Cubans and supports the idea of international solidarity with the opposition movement in Cuba. Directorio was established in 1990 during the International Congress of Cuban Youths for free Cuba in Miami. At first it was an organization of students and the working youth who wanted to contribute to extricating Cuba from Castro’s hands.
The name of the group comes from the 20s when students from universities were forming so-called directorates in Havana which were student associations for defending basic civil rights and protecting them from misusing by the government.

Cuba Democracia Ya!

Cuba Democracia Ya (Cuba Democracy Now!) is another Cuban non-governmental organization ready for co-operation with all Cubans without considering their political views, religion, position in society  etc. Their motto is  “With everyone and for everyone’s benefit” (Jose Marti). They stress that their aim is to work “only for free, independent, democratic, pluralistic, stabile, blossoming Cuba with no violence.

Solidaridad Espanola con Cuba

The website of a Spanish organization busying itself with aiding Cuban canvassers fighting for democracy and spreading the information about civil society in Cuba. They also spread information about the repressions of Cuban regime towards political activists and members of peace and non-violence organizations.

Fundation for Human Rights in Cuba

The FHRC seeks to provide a voice for the victims of oppression in Cuba in contrast to Fidel Castro's international campaigns to bolster support for his despotic regime in spite of its condemnable human rights record.

La Fundación Hispano Cubana

The private, non-partisan  institution dedicated to Spaniards and Cubans living inside and outside of the island. It’s mission is to provide the humanitarian aid and support the Cuban immigrants residing in Spain. Also, its aim is to unite all Cubans through organizaing the cultural and information action that it initiates.

The organization was established in 1996 in Madrid to promote and support the human rights and democratic values. Every three months the organization publishes the Revista Hispano-Cubana, socio-cultural magazine focusing on the Spanish – Cuban relations as well. www.revistahc.org

Payo Libre

Internet magazine about the civil rights in Cuba. Payo Libre came into existence in 2001. It has about thirty coworkers, not only journalists. Payo Libre focuses on the issue of the civil rights in Cuba and monitors the situation of imprisoned dissidents and oppositionists.  Some of the authors also work for Proyecto Pro Cuba Libre (look below).

Friends of Cuban Libraries

An independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting intellectual freedom in Cuba, regardless of whatever government may be in office.  Since the Friends of Cuban Libraries were founded in June, 1999, its members around the world have been especially concerned with defending a group of volunteers who are opening uncensored libraries throughout the island, with the goal of providing public access to reading materials reflecting all points of view.
