Independent Libraries received prize The independent libraries project received several prices amongst others the prize awarded in 2002 by the Swedish Popular Party (Folkpartier) for their job in favor of democracy. Where an independent library can be located? An independent library can be located in a home, where a private collection of books is available to neighbors, friends and all interested persons. Presently, they are located all over the country. Who can run an independent library? People who love books and promote lecture, people who open their home for others and create an open space for the free exchange of information and debate. Which requirements shall be fulfilled by an independent library? In order to create a library, elemental knowledge about the functioning of a library and a collection of at least 300 books are needed. Additionally, a cultural and friendly cooperation with people who use it and a public list of books available are recommended. It is forbidden to censure books regardless of the item treated, the author, ideology, religion or to limit its availability to any person. Who can use an independent library? All persons are welcomed regardless of his age.
What kind of books can be found in an independent library? Books related to different issues which can be of interest for people, CD’s, newspapers, magazines, scientific and popular literature, maps, video tapes can be found there. What other services are provided by an independent library? All independent library offer many services including meetings, games and plays for children, talks about pictures, music, exhibitions, conferences and all kind of activities which can promote the interest for the lecture. Can a book be taken home?
It is possible. The only requirement is that the borrow treat the book with respect. A book can be lend for 15 days, but this deadline can be extended. How you can help an independent library from abroad? It is not costly nor time-consuming. We recommend the following:
- You can contact directly the independent library, learn about its projects and be in touch with them.
- You can send books, maps, newspapers, posters, documents on any item, taking into consideration the interest of each library.
- You can send paper, writing tools, pencils, envelops; items not easily available in Cuba.
- You can send a postcard supporting their activities and their job. It is important that they know that their job is recognized and appreciated in the world.
