Vitral
Vitral, the socio-cultural magazine, was founded by Dagoberto Valdes in 1994 as “a platform of transparency, pluralistic socio-political thought” and a “multi-color light from Cuba”. The magazine was issued in the framework of Center for Social Education formed within the diocese of Pinar del Rio. In his articles, Dagoberto took up subjects deliberately avoided by the official media. His opinions were daring and on a high moral level. The magazine was open for authors who had different than allowed point of view. Freedom of speech, democracy, common effort for social and political changes, awakening of the social consciousness and civic responsibility for the situation in Cuba – these were the values that laid at the foundation of the paper. Dagoberto patiently explained essence of democracy and necessary changes in society on the basis of the values and principles of Social Doctrine of the Church. His articles were characterized by critical approach to modern model of consumptive societies of the West and moral reflection rooted in the deep Catholic faith. Dagoberto sees an individual in global perspective as a valuable citizen who has a right and duty to fight for his freedom, that is why he highlights the necessity of personal improvement of every human. The last issue of Vitral under the supervision of Dagoberto Valdes and his team was published in April 2007. The decision to exclude Dagoberto from editorial staff was taken arbitrary by a new bishop of Pinar del Rio, Mons. Serpo.
